The F1 ‘in-school’ Tournament is a Worldwide Competition which starts with Regional Finals. Students build a miniature Formula 1 car. The students design the car and get it manufactured in an CNC router. The car must have a space at the back so that a CO2 canister can fit in, in order to propel it along the track. The F1 car can reach up to 55 mph on a 20 metre track.

The 2016-2017 team is named Soar Racing. The team is made up of 6 Transition Years students: Luke Mitchell, Darren Branigan, Glenn Atkins, Brian Doolin, James Kennedy and Jack Fagan.
On the 26th of February 2017, we competed in the F1 in Schools Leinster Regional Finals in the City West Hotel. The competition was extremely intense with a wide range of schools competing from all over Leinster.
We represented our school with pride in the following tasks;
Formal presentation
Pit display presentation
Portfolio adjudication
Drag race
Fortunately, we finished in the top five which allowed us to qualify for National finals which are held in the RDS.
A number of the original team was unfortunately in France for the French exchange for the national final so a substitute team of five members was sent to represent the team. They did an exceptional job and represent the school very well.
We competed very well at national finals, the competition was very intense.
We unfortunately didn’t win any awards but we had the second fastest time in Ireland and we were only beaten by a 400th of a second. Our best times were as follows;
| Track Length: 20 metres |
Regional Finals |
National finals |
|
Reaction time |
0.156 |
0.187 |
|
Car Time to complete race |
1.180 |
1.182 |

On Monday 30th January 2017, St. Fintan’s High School won the 30th annual History Teacher’s Association of Ireland (HTAI) Quiz for the first time. The prestigious event, which has taken place for the last 3 decades was hosted in Tallaght Community School.
A true team effort with a varying range of answers, the team was made up by Gregory Walls and Daniel Seabrook from 6th year, Tomás O’Connell and Naoise Cunningham from 5th year. After 10 close rounds, the lads were level on points with St. Mac Dara’s from Templeogue, with 52 out of 60. A tie break was needed to decide the winner. After 4 rounds and 11 questions of a tie break with no end in sight, St. Fintan’s finally found an answer without reply.
It is the 1st time a team from St. Fintan’s has finished inside the top 5 in the competition. A special trophy statuette of Cúchulainn was awarded along with a cash prize to the students. It was yet another memorable occasion for our Senior students this year and is testament to the thriving History Department in the school. Many thanks to Mr. Campbell and Mr. Gilleran for preparing the team and to our bus driver Clem who accompanied us on the evening.
